KBR and Frazer-Nash Consultancy Welcome the UK Government’s Greenlight for Sizewell C and Rolls-Royce SMR
Frazer-Nash Consultancy, along with parent company KBR, have shared their response to the UK Government’s confirmation that nuclear power plant Sizewell C will be built, and that Rolls-Royce SMR has been confirmed as the preferred technology partner for small modular reactors in the UK.
Sizewell C will provide low-carbon energy to 6 million homes over its 60-year life and much needed high skilled jobs in the nuclear sector. Additionally, yesterday’s announcement has underlined the vital role that small modular nuclear reactors will play in the low-carbon economy, providing power to the grid and also decarbonising key industries in the UK.
Nial Greeves, Market Director Energy and Infrastructure at Frazer-Nash Consultancy, a KBR company, said: “We welcome the Government’s green light for the new large-scale nuclear plant at Sizewell C, which represents a once in generation opportunity to make a significant contribution to energy security and transition to low carbon energy sources as part of the nation’s stated ambition to achieve net zero by 2050.”
“We are delighted that Rolls-Royce SMR has been confirmed as the preferred technology partner for small modular reactors, helping to position the UK as a world-leader in advanced nuclear technologies. The engagement seen by a range of innovative SMR players in the Great British Nuclear (GBN) process has underlined the market potential in the UK, and we will be excited to see these other technologies play a future role in a broader SMR deployment programme.”
Ian Hudson, Senior Director for Nuclear at KBR, said: “Nuclear power is an essential source of reliable, clean energy and if we are to solve the energy trilemma, nuclear energy needs to be an integral part of the energy mix. Industry is committed to helping the government achieve its ambition, and KBR is excited to build on the work we are already doing to contribute to this.”
We welcome the Government’s leadership, while also reminding of the importance of long-term, sustained government support, coupled with private sector investment, to remove barriers and ensure an at-pace roll-out of these transformational technologies.
The UK possesses a rich nuclear heritage and a skilled supply chain that is ready to accelerate the deployment of new nuclear capacity. Renowned for supporting large-scale, long-term, complex government and private sector projects around the globe KBR’s nuclear workforce has grown rapidly to over 1,000 professionals, including interns, apprentices and graduates supporting nuclear programmess across the UK.
We now stand ready with our clients and supply chain partners across the whole UK nuclear sector to work together and ensure that new nuclear can succeed and thrive.
