KBR Celebrates National Hire a Veteran Day

As KBR celebrates National Hire a Veteran Day on July 25, my first thought was “that’s basically every day at KBR.” More than 2,000 KBR Government Solutions U.S. (GS US) employees have self-identified as military veterans. Yet hundreds more veterans work within the business segment and KBR overall due to its presence around the world. I was proud to join KBR in 2006, and I feel like much of my work for KBR GS US is a continuation of my service to our country. We support many of America’s toughest missions – on the ground in extreme environments, in cyberspace, and in actual space with our NASA work. When we say we’re “The Team Behind the Mission℠”, we mean it. With our contingency operations, we deploy within 24 hours of receiving notification of a new mission, and we have people working 24/7/365 on mission-critical activities throughout the globe.

Veterans are a good fit for KBR, primarily because they are familiar with KBR’s customers and understand the mission. They often have experience at military installations (our work locations) around the world, and they may have worked side-by-side with KBR while serving on active duty. These employees provide unique perspectives and a level of customer insight we would not otherwise possess. KBR hires veterans from all ranks and years of service, as well as a wide range of Military Occupational Specialties (MOS). Even our commercial work benefits from the specialized skills veterans acquire while on active duty, such as metrology, supply chain, logistics, and asset management.

KBR offers veterans an opportunity to expand their careers, into the private sector, while providing meaningful work with the U.S. Government and commercial entities. KBR’s size and breadth of capabilities allows veterans to choose from jobs that are on-site with government customers, in our corporate offices at numerous locations, or fully remote opportunities. With locations across five continents, many of our jobs provide travel opportunities around the world. Veterans are often familiar with KBR through previous deployments, but, increasingly, veterans find KBR through the Department of Defense (DOD) SkillBridge program.

KBR participates in the DOD SkillBridge initiative, which gives service members the opportunity to gain valuable civilian work experience through specific industry training, apprenticeships, or internships during the last 180 days of service. SkillBridge connects service members with industry partners during their transition, providing them a chance to work and learn in a civilian career. SkillBridge gives KBR the opportunity to access and further develop the careers of the world’s most trained, motivated, and skilled individuals at no cost. Service members continue to receive their full military compensation and benefits while KBR provides the training and work experience. KBR’s goal is to hire service members into meaningful careers upon completion of the program.

KBR provides support and a sense of community with sponsorship of the Armed Forces Community Employee Resource Group (ERG), which welcomes all veterans, reservists, spouses and supporters from across the KBR organization. We have a global charter allowing regional chapters to be established around the globe and to tailor their activity and objectives to the most pressing local needs. I often talk about KBR’s culture having a “family feel,” and I am so proud we do work that matters all over the world.
